I like this part of the articel

"Where is this leading? Lanier calls attention to the "so-called 'Artificial Intelligence' and the race to erase personality and be most Meta"

IMHO he is observing the mistakes that many people are making and that will wash out in the end. Personality will rise to the top. Humans want to be entertained and feel good, and it is our unique personalities that allow that, not rankings. In Malcom Gladwell's book, Blink he speaks of the Warren Harding Error. He basically suggest that the only reason Warren Harding was elected was because of personality. The same was suggested of Reagan.

That leads to his other concern of collective intelligence. I can argue, that all power and knowledge comes from the willingness of the collective to accept what is given. I am not sure I would call that intelligence. What Social Media has done is given the masses a choice of what to believe as well as a voice to add to the dialog.
