I go on and on about this so much, I figured I needed some references in here, and I just found this good entry in Wikipedia for a quick capsule version. Be sure to check out the cultural and political impact of the long tail. I'm sure there will be even more to it than that, but it's a good starting point.

I've also just discovered that Chris Anderson (Wired Editor in Chief) has a blog to go with the book he's working on, by the same name, so that just went on my blogroll. His October 2004 Wired article also by that name was what got me all fired up on this topic in the first place.
