by Sally Jo Sorensen
That evening spent I curl
against his back his shoulders,
too broad for that: we turn
again to spoon to lie
like ordinary lovers do.

What a gem, polished and warm in my hand, treasure-poem. Just enough and it bears all the weight, every shining nugget! You could sculpt this, Sally Jo, set it out in the garden forever, ever. Thanks!

You can read both sides of this poem, up, down, acrosswards, and it still comforts, still fits. I like, I like.

This is great - I love reading between the lines in this poem, it's so rich and like you say, Heather, it works in so many ways. "To lie / like ordinary lovers do" is so beautiful and to me, delivers such a sense of peace, relief, and trueness (is that a word?) - I love it. It's like the speaker has come home, finally, and to suggest such a conflict the speaker has come home FROM, in so few words, is amazing.

...but then I come back and read it again and there's no tension or conflict at all. What a dynamic little poem this is, so alive.

I agree. This has the unity and beauty of a sea shell. Well done.

I am in awe of Sally Jo: she can paint a long expansive stroke, then pull it tight as a knot in silk. That woman's got powers!
